Quitting Smoking

 

You may be one of the thousands of people today who have been thinking about quitting smoking, and maybe even have tried to few times. It can be discouraging to attempt quitting smoking, especially if you have tried it before, but fell back into the habit. Don’t despair though, quitting smoking is within your power! In order to make quitting smoking a success for you, begin by understanding your addiction. It’s not just the nicotine that’s keeping you from quitting smoking. Think about the other aspects of your life, your family, friends, significant other, workplace, hobbies, and family history. The interplay of any or many of these factors can form a barrier to you quitting smoking.

It’s increasingly rare these days, but do you work in a place where people are smoking? Including either co-workers or customers? Or is smoking part of your routine for breaks from work?
Quitting smoking when you’re in this kind of work environment means that your daily routine and people you encounter will trigger the urge to continue the behaviour of smoking. Quitting smoking here is a change that might seem to make you uncomfortable, and out of sync with the routine you’ve developed at work till now.

If you socialize with people who are
smokers, or frequent places of entertainment where smoking is allowed, you’ll also find yourself facing external challenges while quitting smoking. Again comfort and routines are factors, but on top of this there are social elements at work. Even though you are quitting smoking, the habit has been an enjoyable experience. It is associated with friends, and good times, and being in a place where you have fun. Quitting smoking can have the effect of diminishing your enjoyment of your social life. This makes quitting smoking especially frustrating, because while you’re doing something to improve your life and well being, it can seem as though all quitting smoking is doing is preventing you from enjoying your life. Also your family and home life is another factor that can make quitting smoking a difficult goal to achieve. This is especially the case when there is another smoker in the house, whether it be your significant other, a parent, child, sibling, or chain-smoking grandparent. Even when there isn’t another smoker in the house, just the general stresses and arguments that arise in day to day family life can make quitting smoking very difficult. Smoking might be part of your coping mechanisms, and while you’re quitting smoking, things that might have just rolled off your back before, tend to get to you a lot more.

So when you have decided that
quitting smoking is right for you, how do you prepare yourself for these problems now that we’ve anticipated them? Well you need to ask for help and support from your co-workers, friends, and family; let them know that you’re quitting smoking and you can’t do it alone. By doing this you are getting other people to help make your environment conducive to your goal of quitting smoking.

And to make
